AS the nation’s representatives warm up for this year’s Olym­pics, which kicks off on August 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we urge them to win laurels. The Rio Games will end on August 21 while the Paralympic Games is scheduled to hold from September 7 to 18.

As part of the preparations for the global sporting fiesta, the Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has been named the captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Also, the 40-year-old table tennis star, Funke Os­honaike, who will be making her sixth appearance at the games after her debut at Atlanta ’96, was named the assistant team captain.

Mikel Obi, one of the three over­age players in the national U-23 football team for the games, will be making his debut appearance at the Olympic Games. We re­call that Mikel reportedly turned down the opportunity to be part of the football squad which lost to Argen­tina in the finals at the Beijing 2008 Games.

Mikel and Oshonaike were reportedly chosen to lead Team Nigeria because of their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assign­ments. According to Nigeria’s Chef-de-Mission at the games, Christian Ohaa, Mike is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and will likely be a role model to upcoming athletes while Oshonaike is experi­enced and one of the oldest athletes in the team.

The handlers of Team Nigeria believe that the combined efforts of the duo will likely bring goodwill to the team and project the country’s image positively to the world. We recall that Team Nigeria was led to the Lon­don 2012 edition of the games by Beijing 2008 Olympics bronze medalist, Chika Chukwumerije and assisted by another Beijing bronze medalist, Blessing Okagbare.

In a related development, the national U-23 squad has been charged by the Acting Consul General, Consulate of Nigeria, Atlanta, Mr. Olu Fa­lomo, to exhibit the Nigerian spirit so as to reclaim the Olympic football gold and make Nigeria proud again. Also, the Nigeria Olympic Commit­tee (NOC) Medical and Scientific commission has released guidelines on how to avoid contracting the deadly Zika virus to sports fans travelling to Brazil for the Olympic Games.

Despite inadequate preparations for the Rio Games, we enjoin our sports ambassadors to unleash the can-do Nigerian spirit and win lau­rels for the fatherland. After the great success achieved by Team Nigeria in Atlanta ’96, we have not done well in subsequent competitions. In the London Olympics four years ago, we did not win even a medal.

We have witnessed a drastic decline in sports in recent times. Govern­ment’s neglect of sports has not helped matters. Most of our athletes are on their own in terms of training and exposure to the games. Our prepa­rations have been everything but adequate. The fire brigade or ad hoc approach to sports should be blamed for our lacklustre performance at international sports events.

We enjoin our representatives to do their best and aim to win. Let the desire to make our countrymen and women proud inspire them to do well at the games. They should not replicate the appalling record at the Lon­don games. Let them remain steadfast and focused and avoid all manner of scandals, inc

BARELY one week after the intervention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors in the crisis rocking the National Assembly, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Timi Frank, has called for the resignation of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), in­sisting that they have failed in the management of the rift.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, Timi Frank argued that the silence and the inability of the party leadership to resolve any of the crises rocking the party is a mark of failure, adding that NEC has reduced itself to only conducting prima­ries.

His words: “The purpose of this address is to express disappointment in the silence of our party APC over the crisis rocking the National Assem­bly particularly the House of Representatives.

“It is disheartening to note that the party has not waded in to resolve the crisis involving two mem­bers of the party at the House of Representatives. The issue rocking the National Assembly has become embarrassing to our party and to Nigeri­ans. This is not a personal attack on the leadership of the party. The silence of my party all the time is not good for democracy. I can tell you clearly, nobody will want to talk, I believe it is my duty as the Acting Publicity Secretary of the APC to speak either on my own capacity to intervene.

“This is not the first time our party is keeping quiet on issues affecting individual members of the party. We’ve not been able to resolve the crisis involving our members in the Senate.

THE Peoples Democratic Par­ty, (PDP) Caretaker Committee, yesterday vowed to go ahead with the party National Conven­tion fixed for next month in Port Harcourt.

Justice Obong Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja had on Thursday declared that the Convention held last May in Port Harcourt which led to the emergence of Senator Ahmed Makarfi was illegal, as he noted that it was held in defiance to the orders of a Lagos High Court restraining the party.

But addressing newsmen yesterday, spokesperson of the Senator Makarfi commit­tee, Dayo Adeyeye disclosed that the ruling of Justice Abang did not restrain the Commit­tee from proceeding with the scheduled convention. Adeyeye said the issue be­fore the court was to deter­mine the counsel that has the authority to represent the PDP and not the legiti­macy of the Makarfi team.

He said: “The motion seeking to restrain the PDP from conducting the proposed August 17, 2016 National Conven­tion has not been heard by the court and no date has been fixed for the hearing of same.

“What was before the court yesterday was the is­sue of who is the authen­tic legal counsel for the PDP between Ferdinand Orbih, SAN and O.O. Fakunle, SAN.

“The court in determin­ing the question of legal representation held that the appointment of O.O. Fakunle, SAN by Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff was accept­able to the court.

“It must be empha­sised that at no stage did the Honourable Judge set aside the judgment of Justice A.M. Liman of the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court, which could have led to the dissolution of the National Caretaker Com­mittee.

An order validating Sheriff as national chair­man could not have arisen from the issue of proper legal representation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the portion of the ruling relating to this is herein- under reproduced: “Though I have powers to nullify the decision of the Port Harcourt Division that recognised Makarfi leadership, I will not do so because there is no appli­cation to that effect before me. I will, however allow the Court of Appeal to do justice to that.”

“So, if the judgment of Port Harcourt wasn’t nul­lified by Justice Abang, it means the judgment sub­sists.

But speaking at a sepa­rate briefing, Senator Ali Modu expressed satis­faction over the order, which he submitted re­strained Senator Makarfi from parading himself as national chairman. “The judgment of the court said anything done by Senator Makarfi from May till today remain a nullity. So, I wonder why Makarfi is still parad­ing himself as national chairman. If he wants to be national chairman, he should offer himself for a proper convention and seek votes of delegates.”

Commenting on the judgment, Chair­man, Board of Trust­ees (BoT), Peoples Democratic Party, Sena­tor Walid Jibrin has said that the latest court judgment that recog­nised Modu Sheriff as the national chairman of the party was a shocker, but added that the judgment will be appealed.

Senator Jibrin attrib­uted the crisis in PDP to both internal and external forces, adding that the crisis as well as the court judgment will not stop Port Harcourt convention of the party.

Meanwhile, constitu­tional lawyer, Fred Agbe­je, has said that the court ruling that said Modu Sheriff is the PDP national chairman is binding and must be obeyed, since it is the latest judgment on the matter.

According to him, it was the same group that went to court against Ma­karfi, saying, “we may not agree 100 percent with the judgment, but it has been to be obeyed, until it is ap­pealed”

Pregnant woman stages nude maternity photoshoot to encourage mothers to feel positive about their bodies

32-year-old Sonia O'Bree, from Kempsey, New South Wales has stripped off for a maternity shoot in a bid to encourage body positivity. She shared photos from the shoot which took place while she was 34 weeks pregnant with her second child to show women that all body shapes are beautiful and encourage people to ignore the pressure to look a particular way - pregnant or not. Alongside the photos which she shared on Facebook she wrote: 'I recently dared to bare my mummy curves to celebrate my womanly figure in all of its glory. 'I was very lucky to find a wonderful photographer in my local area who was willing to join me in a journey out of our comfort zones to make this shoot happen. 'Tonight she has revealed some of these images, and I honestly could not be happier with them. I'm in love with my own image, I never thought I'd say that about my curves, but I did and I am.' 'I hope my photos will encourage more women to feel positive and beautiful in their mummy curves... even if they are not mummy curves, find comfort and beauty within yourselves,' she continued 'We are, each of us different from the rest. Each of us unique and beautiful. This life is so short, and oh so precious, embrace all that you are, slim or curvy, tall or short. 'Dare to bare.' Speaking to the media about her decision to do a nude maternity shoot, Ms O'Bree said she wanted to have a nude maternity shoot six years ago ahead of the birth of her first child, but her son came early. 'I thought I looked amazing, I was very slender for my first pregnancy,' she said. 'This time around I was 20 kilograms heavier and I was reluctant to have the shoot at first. 'But I spoke to Michelle [the photographer] about it and in the end I talked myself into it. I was both excited and nervous going into it.'

Ms O'Bree said once she was with the photographer it was 'completely comfortable.' 'Basically I figured I needed to embrace what I am at the moment and I am so very happy with that. After seeing the photos I have a whole new outlook on my body shape,' she said. 'She sent me two of the photos as a preview and I looked at them and I was just amazed. I told her "you make my chubby bits look beautiful" and that's the way I feel. 'I can't stop looking at them and I am suddenly in love with my body. I love my baby bump of course and I just feel very empowered by the whole situation.' Ms O'Bree said she shared the photos on such a large platform because she wanted to share the change in her beliefs. 'There is so much pressure on women in general and especially now there are so many fitness fanatics posting photos and fit mums working out with their teeny tiny beautiful baby bumps,' Ms O'Bree said. 'Whether it's natural or not, not everyone is like that and the vast majority of us have curves.' 'One lady commented asking if I had a big baby or twins and it got under my skin so in posting the photos I felt like it was a "stick it to them" kind of moment. 'I do believe my body is beautiful and while I had emotional, low days before, I can't imagine feeling anything other than beautiful anymore and that's how all of us women should feel.'

21-year-old rape survivor gang-raped again by same men who sexually assaulted her three years ago

A 21-year-old Indian student is currently recovering in the hospital after being gang-raped by a group of men including some charged with sexually assaulting her 3 years earlier, an officer said Monday. The five men abducted the student of the lowest Dalit social caste from outside her college before drugging and raping her in a car. She was found unconscious in bushes on the side of a highway last Wednesday night in Haryana which borders New Delhi. Haryana deputy superintendent of police Pushpa Khatri said the student, who is still in hospital, has identified all five men - two of whom are currently on bail awaiting trial for raping her in 2013. "She has identified the five accused and two of them were involved in the gang-rape of the student in Bhiwandi district in 2013," Khatri told AFP. "We have formed several teams to arrest the accused." The woman's family has accused the five of threatening them in the lead-up to Wednesday's attack, demanding that they withdraw the rape case lodged after the 2013 assault. "The accused were constantly threatening us to compromise outside the court. They even offered us a hefty amount for settlement. But we didn't agree," the victim's brother was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying. The family also alleged they were forced to move to Rohtak district in the state from a neighbouring district after the 2013 attack because of harassment by the accused. Members of the Dalit caste held small protests in Rohtak on Sunday to demand justice for the victim. A 17 year old teen named Garry Pinkney (pictured above), was arrested by police as he attempted to rape a 13year-old girl in the Bronx. Garry is accused of following his young victim into an elevator building on Thursday July 14th and convinced the young girl to let him into her apartment. Once he got inside, the teen armed with a knife demanded money, then forced her to perform oral sex on him before trying to rape her but was spooked by a neighbour and fled. He is now charged with attempted rape, robbery, burglary and a criminal sex act, police said.

"I designed & built this tractor, which is 100% Nigerian, with a team of skilled individuals" said the UK-trained engineer. The tractor is designed with different attachments to cover a variety of farm jobs. He named the tractor Ijodo, meaning labour in the Tiv language. Some of the tractors have been sold, but Terfa is looking for more investment. The engineer also wants to inspire others.
