Ophthalmologist advises Nigerians on regular

An Ophthalmologist, Dr Nkiru Akaliwe, has advised Nigerians above 40 years to do regular eye check up to ascertain the true status of their eyes.

Akaliwe, a consultant at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital , gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

She called on Nigerians to maintain a healthy living by eating more vegetables and fruits so as to prevent visual impairment.

According to her, the eye is very important in human body. Blindness can be treated while some cannot.

The consultant, however, explained that many people in the developing countries were losing their sight to cataracts which could be easily treated.

She noted that glaucoma, which was another type of eye disease, gradually caused blindness without the patient knowing.

Akaliwe said that 285 million people globally have eye problems and from the figure, 39 million from developing countries like Nigeria, were blind.

She advised people with eye problems to avoid buying medicated glasses without the prescription of an Ophthalmologists, saying, “it is dangerous to use medicated glasses not recommended by an expert’’.

Chibok Girls Boko Haram faction ready to negotiate release of 83 more - govt

In recent days, the Nigerian army has been carrying out an offensive in the Zambia's forest, a stronghold of Boko Haram.

Some of the 21 Chibok school girls released

The Islamic State-allied faction of Boko Haram which last week freed 21 of more than 200 Chibok girls kidnapped in April 2014 in northeast Nigeria is willing to negotiate the release of 83 more of the girls, the president's spokesman said on Sunday.

Around 220 girls were taken from their school in 2014 in Chibok in northeastern Borno state, where Boko Haram has waged a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic state, killing thousands and displacing more than 2 million people.

A faction of the militant group released 21 of the girls on Thursday after the Red Cross and the Swiss government brokered a deal. They were brought from the northeastern city of Maiduguri to the capital Abuja to meet state officials.

" These 21 released girls are supposed to be tale bearers to tell the Nigerian government that this faction of Boko Haram has 83 more Chibok girls ," Garba Shehu, spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone.

" The faction said it is ready to negotiate if the government is willing to sit down with them," said Shehu, adding that the state is prepared to negotiate with the branch of Boko Haram.

The Islamic State-allied splinter group said the rest of the kidnapped Chibok girls were with the part of Boko Haram under the control of figurehead Abubakar Shekau, according to Shehu.

Boko Haram has apparently split with a big group moving away from Shekau over his failure to adhere to guidance from the Iraq- and Syria- based Islamic State, which in August named Musab al-Barnawi as its new leader for West Africa.

But that appointment was later dismissed in a 10-minute audio clip on social media by a man purporting to be Shekau, exposing divisions within the jihadist group that has plagued Nigeria and neighbours Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed on Thursday denied reports that the state had swapped captured Boko Haram fighters for their release and said he was not aware if any ransom had been paid. He said a Nigerian army operation against Boko Haram would continue. In recent days, the Nigerian army has been carrying out an offensive in the Sambisa forest, a stronghold of Boko Haram.

The militants controlled a swathe of land around the size of Belgium at the start of 2015, but Nigeria's army has recaptured most of the territory. The group still stages suicide bombings in the northeast, as well as in neighbouring Niger and Cameroon.

Okorocha 'Buhari's comment about wife taken out of context' - Gov says

The Governor said the President's intention about his comment has been misrepresented by Nigerians.Okorocha.jpgImo State Governor, Rochas OkorochaImo State Governor, Mr Rochas Okorocha, has urged Nigerians to stop criticising President Muhammadu Buhari over the comment he made about his wife, Aisha. Okorocha said the President's controversial response to his wife's BBC interview was taken out of context. In the interview, the First Lady said unless Buhari shakes up his government, she would not support his re-election in 2019. She revealed that her husband does not know a large number of the people he appointed to top positions, noting that a "few people" are behind the presidential appointments. Buhari, however, played down his wife's claims, saying she should stay out of politics. "I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room, and the other room," the President had said. Many, especially women and women’s rights groups have criticised the President for reducing women to cooks and housemaids. Okorocha, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, October 16, said Nigerians need to be cautious in their reactions to the President's statement. He said: "I was there when the president made the comment and both the wife’s interview and the President’s comment were taken out of context. "I can understand why international community speak on this matter. It is because of woman’s rights and all that that is going on right now in the whole world. "I tend to believe that Nigerians will understand the situation better than any other persons in the world. "I do not think that those were the intentions, as being described by all and sundry and those condemning the act. "If there is a clarion call to say ‘Mr President look into your cabinet and bring in more people’, there is nothing wrong for Mr President to take note of the comment by people. "That is not really the situation that should create a big hullabaloo," However, Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, had last Friday trivialised Buhari's statement, saying it a mere joke. "My friends, can't a leader get a sense humour anymore? Mr President laughed before that statement was made," Shehu wrote on Twitter. But in what seems to mean he was not joking about his statement, the President reaffirmed his stance in a later interview he granted Phil Gayle of Deutsche-Welle shortly before he left Berlin, Germany on Saturday. When asked to explain what he meant in his earlier statement about his wife, Buhari said: "I am sure you have a house. You know where your kitchen is, you know where your living room is, and I believe your wife looks after all of that, even if she is working." "That is your wife’s function"? The journalist asked. The President responded: "Yes, to look after me."

Nigerians Want Patience Jonathan Probed Over N 13 Billion Loot

patience%2Bjonathan%2Bprobe.jpg

Many Nigerians have expressed outrage over the bid by former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to reclaim the sum of $34.1 million (N13.31 billion) lodged in some bank accounts linked to her. They demanded the prosecution of the ex-first lady and her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, over the matter.

The fund was trapped following the freezing of the accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the suspicion that they were proceeds of money laundering. The former first lady had dragged the EFCC and Skye Bank to court over the freezing of accounts allegedly belonging to the former presidential aide, Waripamo Dudafa.

According to her, the fund, which were lodged in business accounts opened in the name of Dudafa belonged to her. Former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, urged the EFCC to probe not just the former first lady, but also her husband, over the bank accounts.

Musa, who spoke with Daily Telegraph yesterday, said that while the former first lady must be held accountable for the huge fund linked to her, the investigation cannot be complete if it was not extended to her husband. “She is not the only one; even her husband should be probed.

The investigation will have no meaning if Jonathan is not probed. How did she come about that type of money? Of course, she couldn’t have got that kind of money without her husband creating the opportunities,” he said. Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), the chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption (PACC) told DailyTelegraph that Jonathan’s wife must explain how she acquired the money.

President Buhari Says His Government Belongs To The Youth

President Buhari says that his government belongs to the youth of Nigeria. He said this in a personally signed letter to all youths in Nigeria in commemoration of the World International Youth Day which was yesterday August 12th. In the letter, President Buhari acknowledged the role of the youths in the 2015 general election. Read a copy of the signed letter below:

PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI’S MESSAGE ON INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

Dear Nigerian Youths, Today is International Youth Day. I am delighted to commemorate this occasion, the second such celebration since I took office. The roles that young Nigerians played in the historic election that brought our government to power will never be forgotten.

This government belongs to you. I would like to use this opportunity to assure you of our commitment to improving the quality of your lives and to creating opportunities for you to achieve your dreams and ambitions. We are mindful of the fact that Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world. Those young people are immensely energetic and talented, consistently blazing the trail in the arts, sports, business and technology.

We are proud of what you have done and what you are able to do. We have launched a number of initiatives targeted at expanding the economic opportunities available to young Nigerians. N-Power, our job creation scheme, for which applications are ongoing, will employ 500,000 of you in agriculture, education, healthcare and technology.

The Aso Villa Demo Day will soon bring 30 of the most innovative young Nigerians to the State House to showcase their talent in providing technology-based solutions to some of our most challenging problems. The Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), part of our N500 billion Social Investment Programme, will provide soft loans to thousands of young entrepreneurs across the country.

These are just some of the many initiatives we have designed and are implementing for you. You are the strength and future of our country. Please be assured that this administration will create an enabling environment for you to realize your potentials.

I wish you all a Happy International Youth Day celebration. Thank You. Muhammadu Buhari President Federal Republic of Nigeria August 12, 2016

New Boko Haram leader, Welcome sir!

Boko-HAram-620x330.jpg

New, Boko Haram leader, I have received your appointment with warmth and this is because I believe sincerely that Allah in his mercy is giving you the platform where you can make history. This to me is the opportunity for you to bring your people to the table for dialogue. No doubt you and your people are a people of vision, a people with the passion to not only fight for your believe but also die while trying to entrench you beliefs. The truth is that there can be no more meaningful position than dialogue. Dialogue steeped in compromise and mutual respect. The violence must stop as both sides have suffered tremendously from the carnage that has been unleashed since the beginning of the campaign. Nigeria and indeed Nigerians are a peace loving people. From our antecedents we have shown a great believe in culture, togetherness and pure love and that is why we have this great melting pot we call our country. A melting pot with different nationalities, religion but with a uniting bond that even a fratricidal civil war could not break. I believe very strongly that no amount of violence would break the back of this nation, hence the need for all sides to table their differences and truly discuss with an open heart and brotherly love the issues that are causing these divide amongst brothers. This present government has shown a strong resolve to listen to all sides, despite its initial push towards force. This they have shown with the attempt to establish grazing fields for marauding herdsmen and also the ongoing attempt at discussions with the Niger Delta militants who themselves have been carrying along a bombing campaign down south. I believe in the power of reason and I also believe in the founding fathers of Nigeria. The legendary Uthman Dan Fodio brought us Islam from the hills of Futa Djallon and the great Sarduana of Sokoto empowered and embellished it, spreading it far and wide while also giving himself the mandate of ‘dipping the Quran in the Atlantic Ocean’. We have no problem with that, even our Private- Jet flying pastors also have the mandate of spreading Christianity all over the length and breathe of the nation. All these ‘mandates’ must however be done peacefully and with total respect for individual freedom and right of choice. I seek your total understanding of this plea and also your kind resolve to look at your campaign once more with a view to restructuring the execution along peaceful lines so that at least we would have a Nigeria after the campaign. This is a plea on behalf of all the soft targets, the women, children and harmless citizens who continue to bare the full brunt of the campaign even as they struggle to go about their normal lives. I believe that peace will reign even as I thank you for your total understanding of my position.

Abdulmumin-Jibrin-2.png

The Police Special Investigation Panel is set to question the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin in connection with the budget padding scandal. » Jibrin has accused Reps Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and other lawmakers of padding the 2016 budget. “Having gone through the petition, the panel has discovered that more documents are required to be able to isolate allegations which the four principal officers will respond to,” a source told The Nation. “The SIP on Thursday (yesterday) invited Jibrin to bring more documents to fill in some gaps in our profiling of his petition. We expect Jibrin to be with us either on Friday (today) or on Monday. New investigative clues have come up from his comments on his Twitter handle and in interviews that granted. We have different figures to investigate which include: N284billion, N90billion, N40billion and N20billion, the amount bandied at various times. “The list of suspects has also been growing on a daily basis. Jibrin has to appear before the panel to assist it to streamline all the allegations and the suspects,” he added. Kemi Adeosun says no going back on suspended Special Overtime Allowance for Ministry for Finance workers

index.png

Last week, civil servants in the Ministry of Finance staged a protest at the Ministry's secretariat where they called for the sack of the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun over the non-payment of their special overtime allowance. The workers barricaded the entrance to the ministry and accused the Minister of stopping their allowance. Speaking on Channels TV this morning, Adeosun said the suspension of the Special Overtime Allowance for the workers had been stopped by her predecessor, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala "For about 11 years or so, the Federal Inland Revenue Service who are self funded, get 4% of what they collect as cost of collection. They don't get their salaries from the Federation account and every year they allocate a bonus and part of that bonus was given to staff of the office of the Accountant General, Ministry of Finance and Budget of the Federation. It has always been contentious but its always been paid. In 2014, my predecessor then told them this is the last time it would be paid. It was N800 million at the time. It was communicated to the Union that the allowance wasn't in their scheme of service. Its not an official payment that can be justified and so it is not going to continue. So when I was sworn in in 2015, the first issue that was brought to me was this and this year, the claim was N1.2 billion. I consulted with the Head of Service, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Consulted with the Presidency, checked the legalities. There is no provision for it in the budget for FIRS. There is no provision for it in our budget. It is a customary payment rather than an entitlement. I began to engage with the leaderships of the unions around this and explained to them that it wouldn't be possible to continue. I think people are just disappointed because they have always had it. I took time to explain to the staff that what you are legally entitled to you would always get but what is not a legal entitlement, a customary entitlement, can't be paid"she said

Governor El-Rufai declares war on rapists 1 hour ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email

– A few days after the arraignment of a suspected serial rapist in Kaduna state, Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed outraged over the crime – He declared war against rapists and vowed to do his best to ensure the culprits face the law – The governor also assured everyone who knows any victim of rape of adequate protection if he volunteers information Photo - Mallam Nasir El-Rufai Governor Nasir El-Rufai Furious over the rising cases of rape in Kaduna state, Governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared war against rapists. Vanguard reports that the governor announced this on Friday, June 24, a few days after the arraignment of a suspected serial rapist, Haruna Tukur, at Kaduna High Court. The 24-year-old man was arraigned for forcefully having carnal knowledge of a 5-year- old girl at Malali suburb of Kaduna in February. He was also alleged to have been fingered in several similar offences, but had always evaded justice. Addressing the press conference on behalf of his principal, Sam Aruwan, the governor’s spokesman, stressed that Tukur and other culprits would face the law. “On behalf of the governor, I wish to call the attention of the public and call for their cooperation on the increasing cases of rape, especially of minors in Kaduna state. READ ALSO: This must have shocked Governor El-Rufai beyond words “You were all there yesterday in court, when Haruna Tukur was brought to court for defiling a 5- year-old girl. “This is a man that had been arrested and brought before the law in the past. He will jump bail, just to be arrested and brought to the police on the same offence. “The governor is very sad about this, and he wants to make sure that people like Tukur go through the legal process that will determine his crime or not, set him free or convict him. “There is also the case of a woman who specialises in trafficking children between the age of 3 and 5 to some men. We don’t know what she stands to gain from that, and why these men are doing that. We will let you know when she will be arraigned in the court. We have many cases like that,” he said. Aruwan assured people of the state that the governor would do his best to ensure that no one would destroy the future of a minor, or any girl or lady through the destructive use of rape and go free. He also assured everyone who knows any victim of rape of adequate protection if he volunteers information. Meanwhile, 4,035 cases of sexual and child abuse were recorded in Lagos state in the last one year. Ben Murray-Bruce, common sense or hypocrisy?

Ben Murray-Bruce, common sense or hypocrisy? 4 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, representing Bayelsa East senatorial district is always in the news trying to make common sense. However the social media savvy senator did not make much of what he preaches as the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on Thursday, June 23, took over three companies belonging to him and his family. Senator Bruce said it is possible to fight corruption and grow the economy at the same time The assets are being seized following the failure of Bruce and his brothers to settle an N11bn loan owed Union Bank and acquired by AMCON. Bruce and his brothers used the companies as collateral in 2005 and 2007 to borrow various sums of money from the Union Bank of Nigeria Plc and failed to pay back as promised which is long overdue. AMCON purchased the loan in 2011 to save the bank from collapsing. AMCON takes over Silverbird properties The companies affected by the takeover are Silverbird Galleria Limited, Silverbird Promotions Limited, and Silverbird Showtime Limited. READ ALSO: AMCON: 5 things that will happen to Ben Bruce businesses AMCON had, by notice of appointment dated April 18 appointed Muiz Banire as Receiver/Manager over the sprawling assets of the three companies located at 133 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos, Plot No 1161 (Silverbird Galleria); Central Area Cadastral Zone AOO, Abuja; and Abonnema Wharf Road and Abali Park in Port Harcourt City of Rivers State. The takeover followed the interim orders granted by Justice Cecilia Olatoregun- Ishola of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on June 17 which allowed the receiver/ manager to take possession of the said properties. The properties were seen locked up by the agents of the receiver/manager in an exercise carried out under the supervision of men of the Nigerian police as directed by the Court order. When AMCON realized Bruce was not ready to pay back the money, a receiver/manager was appointed the to recover the loan. Commonsense or hypocrisy As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigerians would question the commonsense in owing so much money when the senator receives huge allowance as wardrobe perks. This is even more so when he comes on social media to preach commonsense revolution and act holier than thou. One would have thought he use part of the his allowance to pay up his debt. So much for commonsense indeed! A senator in Nigeria reportedly earns N12,939,549 million in salaries and allowances per annum. Bruce had called for reduction in allowances of members of the National Assembly which received widespread commendation. A number of lawmakers followed suit, giving support to Bruce’s proposal. But no such reduction in emoluments have so far been effected. Ben Bruce reacts to AMCON attack The common sense advocate in a swift reaction to the incident said the situation is being resolved and things will be back to normal. Senator Bruce said in 36 years, Silverbird has grown and it will face challenges like anybody, adding that it is possible to fight corruption and grow the economy at the same time. Bruce, who is not happy with the poor state of the Nigerian economy, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was more concerned about fighting corruption and is not paying attention to what’s going on with the nation’s economy. Some of the Bayelsa state senator’s followers in reaction said he was right. Others even asked him to hide because they will soon come for him like they have done with other people criticising the government. Ben Bruce the social media critique Ben Bruce, unlike the Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose and Fani-Kayode applies tact and subtlety in his criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Most times he takes to the social media platform, to voice his dissenting views of the policies of the government in power. READ ALSO: Nigerians blast Ben Bruce after AMCON attack He focuses more on the promises made by the Buhari- led All Progressives Congress during the election and how the party has continually failed to live up to them. The senator however said he never criticizes anyone but he raises good government and policy issues as a way of driving change. “I have not criticised any government. I have not criticised APC. I have not criticised PDP. I have not criticised Goodluck Jonathan, neither have I criticised Muhammadu Buhari. I have raised good government issues and policy issues,” he said. Some people have wondered why the senator has not spoken until now. Bruce said he had always spoken about these issues. “These are issues that I have raised all my life. Maybe these people on social media have just discovered Ben Bruce but, go and check the speeches I made two years ago, three years ago, twenty years ago, even in front of President Goodluck Jonathan to ascertain whether they are different from what I am saying now; maybe they just discovered me. Go on youtube and see my speeches,” he said. Hopefully this serves as lesson to politicians so they practice what they preach. SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email

President Buhari is not feeling well - Premium Times reports

President-Muhammadu-Buhari-360x2251.jpg Premium Times is exclusively reporting that President Buhari is ill and is being treated at the presidential villa. Read part of the report below... "The president has an infection in his left ear, otherwise called Meniere Disease, a challenge which has drastically reduced his outings in the last one week. As a result of the infection, the president now suffers hearing impairment and routinely complains of severe pains and unusual sounds from that ear, those familiar with his condition told Premium Times. Mr. Buhari, who clocked 73 last December, was said to have confirmed it to some dignitaries who visited him in the past days, explaining to some of them that that was why he was unable to visit Lagos and Rivers as scheduled. He was also said to have told some of his guests that he was struggling to give his failing health a major attention. He is currently being treated by his personal physician and other experts from the State House Clinic, our sources said. An official said the president might seek treatment abroad if his condition does not improve in the next few days. Despite hearing difficulty, the president, our sources said, managed to attend Jumaat service and host some important visitors, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as well as some clergymen on Friday. Presidential spokespersons could not be reached to comment for this story on Friday night. While calls to the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, failed to go through, Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant on media and publicity did not answer or return calls.

If we're faced with same situation we'd shoot the gorilla again- Zoo Director says

The director of the Cincinnati Zoo where a rare gorilla was shot and killed on Saturday after a 4-year- old boy slipped into its enclosure has said if put in the same situation again, he will kill the animal to protect the life of the child despite outcries from Animal rights activists, lawyers & wildlife conservationists over how the animal was shot. Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard said he stands by the decision to kill 17-year-old silverback Harambe to save the child. According to Maynard, those criticizing the zoo officials for killing the animal "don't understand silverback gorillas," Maynard said in a news conference on Monday. And, they were not there when it was time to make the crucial decision. "That child's life was in danger. People who question that don't understand you can't take a risk with a silverback gorilla -- this is a dangerous animal," he said. "Looking back, we'd make the same decision. The child is safe." Zoo director Maynard has refused to blame the family for what happened. "We had a very difficult situation and we made a difficult call at the end. I'm not here to point fingers about fault," he said. "We live in the real world, we make real decisions. People and kids can climb over barriers. We work hard to make sure this zoo is safe. People can climb over barriers, that's what happened." "The barriers are safe. They exceed any required protocols. The trouble with barriers, whatever the barrier is, some people get past it," he said. "The zoo is not negligent." Meanwhile the family have thanked the zoo in a statement through a public relations firm: "We are so thankful to the Lord that our child is safe. He is home and doing just fine. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the Cincinnati Zoo staff. We know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. We hope that you will respect our privacy at this time." Source: CNN

Very cute throwback photos of President Buhari Throwback Photos of Pres. Muhammadu Buhari - shared by Aso Rock via their official Facebook page.

NEW%2BBACKDROP%2BSMS.jpg

President Buhari's Federal Excuses Council by Reno Omokri

On January 22, 2016, I tweeted a joke which went viral. I had said that at meetings of the Federal Executive Council, the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, would address members and say 'turn to your neighbour and say, neighbour have you blamed Jonathan today'! Yes, it was a joke, but like most good jokes, it had and still has a basis in reality! The President and his ministers appear ill prepared for office and the evidence of this is their inability to take responsibility for the situation of things in Nigeria. Was it not John Burroughs who said "a man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else"? Those words should be embossed on a plaque and placed in a very prominent location at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa. Seeing this admonition weekly may help members of the Federal Executive Council take responsibility and stop acting the victim. For example, Nigerians were shocked when the minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in December of 2015 that the Jonathan administration, which had left office six months ago, was responsible for the biting fuel scarcity the nation was and still is grappling with. That statement by Mr. Lai Mohammed is a classic case of psychological projection (a psychological disorder characterized by a patient defending himself against his own unpleasant realities by denying the existence of the reality while at the same time blaming another for it). And it gets worse. It is bad enough that this administration refuses to take responsibility for its own failures, it also wants to take credit for the success of others. In a treatise bothering on megalomania, the publicity and communications team of President Buhari's office claimed the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (AKA TSA) as the major achievement of the first 365 days of the Buhari administration. But for a government that prides itself on anti-corruption, that statement, fraudulent as it is, is dishonest and 'fantastically corrupt'! First of all, the Treasury Single Account WAS NOT an idea of the Buhari administration and secondly the present government DID NOT initiate its implementation. The TSA was conceived by the Jonathan administration and there was to be a staggered implementation because from an expert point of view, it was thought that if all Federal Government funds were suddenly pulled out of the commercial banking sector in one fell swoop, the shock on that sector would be so immense that it would trigger job losses and perhaps bank failures. It was thought that a gradual implementation would allow banks recover such that the baby would not be thrown out with the bath water. Enter the Buhari administration which, in a hurry to claim credit, did not tread with caution, but in one fell swoop forcefully withdrew all Federal Government funds with the threat of sanctions to non compliant banks. Rather than claim this as an achievement, this administration should chalk this one up as a big failure because in their rush to implement something that should have been gradual they have unleashed an unintended consequence on the banking sector such that Nigerian banks over the last year have shed something like 50,000 jobs. As a matter of fact, the pro- Buhari Leadership Newspaper had as a major headline on September 12, 2015, 'Banks Begin Massive Sack Over Treasury Single Account'! Yet, even as the reality of their rushed action stares them in the face, a Presidential spokesman has the nerve to accuse former President Jonathan of lacking the will to implement the TSA! And the excuses continue! In order to explain away its lackluster performance, various ministers and mouthpieces of the current administration have been touring media houses blaming the precarious state of the economy on the refusal of the Jonathan administration to save for the rainy day when crude oil prices were high. In fact, President Buhari himself said "In the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meager resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day.” But even as this administration is set on revising history, it should not be forgotten so soon that the Jonathan administration met about $6.5 billion in the Excess Crude Account, ECA, and increased it to almost $9 billion by 2012. However, the Nigerian Governors Forum, using their influence at the House of Representatives, had gotten that August body to declare the Excess Crude Account illegal in 2012. So excruciating was the pressure from the NGF and most notably from then then Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for the Jonathan administration to end the Excess Crude Account and the Sovereign Wealth Fund and instead share the funds in those accounts amongst the three tiers of government that they approached the Supreme Court, to challenge the legality of the Excess Crude Account and Jonathan's decision to transfer $1 billion from that account to the Sovereign Wealth Fund. Working in tandem with Amaechi and his supporters in the NGF, the then minority APC members of the House of Representatives approached a Federal High Court on the 7th of February, 2014, for a perpetual injunction restraining the Jonathan administration from operating the ECA and to pay all the proceeds of that account into the Federation Account for sharing amongst the three tiers of government. So it is quite clear that President Buhari made the accusation he made on April 4th, 2016 without cross checking the facts or consulting history. If the President is not happy that more funds were not saved in the Excess Crude Account, he should call a Federal Executive Council meeting and ask members to get up and point accusing fingers at his ministers of transport and Power, Works and Housing. In the last 365 days, the most consistent thing that has emanated from the Federal Executive Council is blames, excuses, finger pointing and a refusal to accept responsibility. As at last count, the President and his ministers have excused their inability to stem the economic tide, fully defeat Boko Haram, provide jobs for Nigerians, maintain the availability of petrol, fix roads and improve power on the previous administration. The funniest thing is that just as the media team of the Buhari led Presidency was reeling out its achievement in office on its first anniversary, two state governors were also doing the same thing. The shocking thing however is that if you get the list of achievements released by Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike and Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and compare them with what has been released by the Presidency, the shocking verdict is that in terms of tangible achievements, like roads built and houses constructed and public infrastructure, both of these states have individually outperformed the Federal Government! Do not take my word for it. Google their released anniversary documents and compare and contrast them by yourself. Ignore such silly and intangible achievements included in the Presidential list like 'motivated the military' and 'no more road blocks and curfews' (believe me, the President's team listed these as his achievements!) and focus on tangibles like roads constructed or hospitals built etc and it becomes clear to even the most brainwashed Buhari supporter that both Lagos and Rivers individually beat the Federal Government hands down. Both Wike and Ambode took over from predecessors that did not really support them and who left huge debts and a high monthly wage bill, yet despite these seeming obstacles, both of them have proven the adage true that you will either find a way or you will find an excuse. And for those who are saying that it is not realistic to expect a new government to achieve much, let me remind them that in his first year in office, former President Jonathan did not deliver excuses or blames. In fact in his first year, former President Jonathan revived the Nigerian Railway Corporation and for the first time in decades the Lagos to Kano rail services commenced in 2012 at a cost of ₦1500. He also built nine new universities including the only federal university in Katsina state where President Buhari hails from. Inflation reduced from 10.2% to 9.4% in his first year and remained at single digits throughout his tenure. Average Life Expectancy increased from 47 years to 52 years (according to the UN). In the same period he also launched the NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X satellites to expand Internet Bandwidth and provide early warning to prevent natural disasters as well established the Automotive Development Fund amongst others. Many Nigerians must be wondering that if the Jonathan administration was as bad as the Buhari government says it is, then how come he had to leave office before they started experiencing double digit inflation, negative economic growth rate and 'budget padding'? In conclusion, the word 'execute' means to carry out or put into effect something. When you have a body of men and women who are not carrying out anything, it is hard to see how you can honestly call them a Federal Executive Council. What are they executing? Put it this way, are you an executive if all you do is execute excuses?
