An Ophthalmologist, Dr Nkiru Akaliwe, has advised Nigerians above 40 years to do regular eye check up to ascertain the true status of their eyes.

Akaliwe, a consultant at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital , gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

She called on Nigerians to maintain a healthy living by eating more vegetables and fruits so as to prevent visual impairment.

According to her, the eye is very important in human body. Blindness can be treated while some cannot.

The consultant, however, explained that many people in the developing countries were losing their sight to cataracts which could be easily treated.

She noted that glaucoma, which was another type of eye disease, gradually caused blindness without the patient knowing.

Akaliwe said that 285 million people globally have eye problems and from the figure, 39 million from developing countries like Nigeria, were blind.

She advised people with eye problems to avoid buying medicated glasses without the prescription of an Ophthalmologists, saying, “it is dangerous to use medicated glasses not recommended by an expert’’.

Chibok Girls Boko Haram faction ready to negotiate release of 83 more - govt

In recent days, the Nigerian army has been carrying out an offensive in the Zambia's forest, a stronghold of Boko Haram.

The Islamic State-allied faction of Boko Haram which last week freed 21 of more than 200 Chibok girls kidnapped in April 2014 in northeast Nigeria is willing to negotiate the release of 83 more of the girls, the president's spokesman said on Sunday.

Around 220 girls were taken from their school in 2014 in Chibok in northeastern Borno state, where Boko Haram has waged a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic state, killing thousands and displacing more than 2 million people.

A faction of the militant group released 21 of the girls on Thursday after the Red Cross and the Swiss government brokered a deal. They were brought from the northeastern city of Maiduguri to the capital Abuja to meet state officials.

" These 21 released girls are supposed to be tale bearers to tell the Nigerian government that this faction of Boko Haram has 83 more Chibok girls ," Garba Shehu, spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone.

" The faction said it is ready to negotiate if the government is willing to sit down with them," said Shehu, adding that the state is prepared to negotiate with the branch of Boko Haram.

The Islamic State-allied splinter group said the rest of the kidnapped Chibok girls were with the part of Boko Haram under the control of figurehead Abubakar Shekau, according to Shehu.

Boko Haram has apparently split with a big group moving away from Shekau over his failure to adhere to guidance from the Iraq- and Syria- based Islamic State, which in August named Musab al-Barnawi as its new leader for West Africa.

But that appointment was later dismissed in a 10-minute audio clip on social media by a man purporting to be Shekau, exposing divisions within the jihadist group that has plagued Nigeria and neighbours Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed on Thursday denied reports that the state had swapped captured Boko Haram fighters for their release and said he was not aware if any ransom had been paid. He said a Nigerian army operation against Boko Haram would continue. In recent days, the Nigerian army has been carrying out an offensive in the Sambisa forest, a stronghold of Boko Haram.

The militants controlled a swathe of land around the size of Belgium at the start of 2015, but Nigeria's army has recaptured most of the territory. The group still stages suicide bombings in the northeast, as well as in neighbouring Niger and Cameroon.

For Real? Student Withdraws From University After He Confessed He Cheated In WAEC

Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State has said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the institution. Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to the university confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination. Abolarin, who said he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said continuing his university education, using an unmerited certificate would be unjust and immoral. He wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016. He said wanted to withdraw from the school as he got his WAEC through examination malpractice. Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal of the student. Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity. The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his future endeavour. Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read br /> “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. Nigerians Want Patience Jonathan Probed Over N 13 Billion Loot

Many Nigerians have expressed outrage over the bid by former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to reclaim the sum of $34.1 million (N13.31 billion) lodged in some bank accounts linked to her. They demanded the prosecution of the ex-first lady and her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, over the matter.

The fund was trapped following the freezing of the accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the suspicion that they were proceeds of money laundering. The former first lady had dragged the EFCC and Skye Bank to court over the freezing of accounts allegedly belonging to the former presidential aide, Waripamo Dudafa.

According to her, the fund, which were lodged in business accounts opened in the name of Dudafa belonged to her. Former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, urged the EFCC to probe not just the former first lady, but also her husband, over the bank accounts.

Musa, who spoke with Daily Telegraph yesterday, said that while the former first lady must be held accountable for the huge fund linked to her, the investigation cannot be complete if it was not extended to her husband. “She is not the only one; even her husband should be probed.

The investigation will have no meaning if Jonathan is not probed. How did she come about that type of money? Of course, she couldn’t have got that kind of money without her husband creating the opportunities,” he said. Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), the chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption (PACC) told DailyTelegraph that Jonathan’s wife must explain how she acquired the money.

Women indulging in smoking are more at risk of developing bleeding inside the lining of the brain, also known as subarachnoid haemorrhage, a study has warned. Subarachnoid haemorrhage is a condition of bleeding in the lining between the brain’s surface and underlying brain tissues. The findings showed that although cigarette smoking was linked to an increased risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage among both sexes, women faced the highest risk. “Female sex has been described as an independent risk factor for subarachnoid haemorrhage, but we found strong evidence that the elevated risk in women is explained by vulnerability to smoking,” said lead author Joni Valdemar Lindbohm, Physician at the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Furthermore, among light smokers (1 to 10 cigarettes per day), women were 2.95 times more likely to have subarachnoid haemorrhage compared to non-smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 1.93 times more likely. Women who smoked 11 to 20 cigarettes per day were 3.89 times more likely to have subarachnoid haemorrhage compared to non- smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 2.13 times more likely. Women who smoked 21 to 30 cigarettes per day were more than 8.35 times likely to have subarachnoid haemorrhage compared to non- smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 2.76 times more likely.

Facebook tests low cost wi-fi service in India

After India’s decision to ban Facebook’s free but limited Internet service, Free Basics, the social media giant is testing a fast, low-cost commercial wi-fi service in the country, according to reports. “We are testing Express Wi-Fi program in India currently that allows customers to purchase fast, reliable and affordable data packages from their local ISP (Internet service providers) to access the Internet via local hotspots,” a Facebook spokesperson told the Economic Times of India on Monday.

Express Wi-Fi has already completed a trial period in the country with the local state run telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, and about 125 local wi-fi hotspots, the spokesperson said. The Express Wi-Fi software is expected to help local ISP’s sell and provide wi-fi service in rural, hard to reach areas and help millions of Indians connect to the internet for the first time.

China’s 1000 dancing robots break Guinness World Records

A group of 1,007 intelligent robots set a new Guinness World Record after dancing in unison for more than a minute. The robots came together at the main venue for the 2016 Qingdao International Beer Festival in the Huangdao District of Qingdao, in east China’s Shandong Province on Saturday, Chinese news site Yibada reported.

There were 1,040 robots in total, each 43.8 centimetres high, and 1,007 of them finished the challenge. The ones that fell or stopped before the one minute mark were not counted in the World Record. Quan Jinyou, the chief technology officer of Qingdao-based Ever Win Company, Ltd., the company which produced the robots, told Chinese news agency Xinhua that the biggest challenge was dealing with radio frequency interference, from mobile phones or Bluetooth devices.

The truth is that there can be no more meaningful position than dialogue. Dialogue steeped in compromise and mutual respect. The violence must stop as both sides have suffered tremendously from the carnage that has been unleashed since the beginning of the campaign. Nigeria and indeed Nigerians are a peace loving people. From our antecedents we have shown a great believe in culture, togetherness and pure love and that is why we have this great melting pot we call our country. A melting pot with different nationalities, religion but with a uniting bond that even a fratricidal civil war could not break. I believe very strongly that no amount of violence would break the back of this nation, hence the need for all sides to table their differences and truly discuss with an open heart and brotherly love the issues that are causing these divide amongst brothers. This present government has shown a strong resolve to listen to all sides, despite its initial push towards force. This they have shown with the attempt to establish grazing fields for marauding herdsmen and also the ongoing attempt at discussions with the Niger Delta militants who themselves have been carrying along a bombing campaign down south. I believe in the power of reason and I also believe in the founding fathers of Nigeria. The legendary Uthman Dan Fodio brought us Islam from the hills of Futa Djallon and the great Sarduana of Sokoto empowered and embellished it, spreading it far and wide while also giving himself the mandate of ‘dipping the Quran in the Atlantic Ocean’. We have no problem with that, even our Private- Jet flying pastors also have the mandate of spreading Christianity all over the length and breathe of the nation. All these ‘mandates’ must however be done peacefully and with total respect for individual freedom and right of choice. I seek your total understanding of this plea and also your kind resolve to look at your campaign once more with a view to restructuring the execution along peaceful lines so that at least we would have a Nigeria after the campaign. This is a plea on behalf of all the soft targets, the women, children and harmless citizens who continue to bare the full brunt of the campaign even as they struggle to go about their normal lives. I believe that peace will reign even as I thank you for your total understanding of my position.

Budget Padding Scandal Police to question Jibrin over allegations

The Police Special Investigation Panel is set to question the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin in connection with the budget padding scandal. » Jibrin has accused Reps Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and other lawmakers of padding the 2016 budget. “Having gone through the petition, the panel has discovered that more documents are required to be able to isolate allegations which the four principal officers will respond to,” a source told The Nation. “The SIP on Thursday (yesterday) invited Jibrin to bring more documents to fill in some gaps in our profiling of his petition. We expect Jibrin to be with us either on Friday (today) or on Monday. After getting all documents, we will then formally quiz Jibrin on record. “We have shifted the interaction with the principal officers until we are done with Jibrin. So, the invitation which they received has been postponed.
