Gay men attacked in Cote d’Ivoire for sympathizing with Orlando victims

Gay men attacked in Cote d’Ivoire for sympathizing with Orlando victims
00.png
Six gay men were attacked in Cote d’Ivoire and forced to flee their homes after they were pictured signing a condolence book for the victims of the recent attack at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida early this month. The U.S. embassy in the country had hosted an event a fortnight ago to honor the Florida victims and published a photo of the six men on its website with the caption: ‘LGBT community signing the condolence book’.

Days after the tribute, one of the men in the photo was attacked by a mob in his neighbourhood. Another man in the picture was also attacked after the photo was circulated on Facebook and other websites. The others were verbally abused. All six of them have fled their homes for fear of further attack on them.

32 'Health' Foods to Stop Eating Immediately

32 Health Halo Foods to Stop Eating Immediately

Marketers are smart: They know that snapping a "healthy" label on a product will make people buy it. Don't fall for the health halo on these foods!

With all the food trends and conflicting information out there, it's difficult to tell which foods are actually healthy for you-—and which ones are nothing more than a marketing gimmick hoping to take advantage of your quest for a better diet. We're here to knock the halo off of these 32 foods often considered healthy.

1. Smoothie Bowls

There's no denying that smoothie bowls are delicious. They can be super healthy, too, as long as they're made with whole foods with sensible portion sizes. The problem: Many of these smoothie bowls—especially the ones found in restaurants—are calorie and sugar bombs made with fruit juices, purees, honey, and sweetened yogurt. The result? A snack that clocks in at several hundred calories—and sometimes (way) over your daily recommended sugar intake.

2. Granola

Granola has to be healthy, right? Wrong. The crunchy stuff made with oats averages a whopping 597 calories per cup—not to mention 28 grams of fat and 24 grams of sugar per cup. Yes, per cup! There are somewhat healthier versions of your favorite crunchy granola, but your best bet is to ditch it for oatmeal.

3. Veggie 'Chips'

Need to step up your veggie game? Don't go for veggie chips. This health food aisle staple seems like it would be healthy, but the way they're processed in manufacturing plants means you're getting a ton of sodium (and maybe even sugar) without all of the nutrients. Crunch into some raw carrots or celery sticks, instead!

4. Pre-Made Protein Shakes

A common theme of many foods on this list is that they can be healthy when they're made at home with healthy ingredients and portion control in mind. The problem is that we tend to assume that the same things we buy in-store are the same. Not true. Take pre-made protein shakes and smoothies, for instance. Like smoothie bowls, these pre-packaged treats include a ton of health-wrecking sugar and other ingredients you don't want in your body. Your best bet? Make your own with whey or plant-based protein powder and your choice of water or unsweetened nut milk.

5. Organic Candy

Candy is never part of a healthy diet, and that goes for the seemingly-healthy organic candy, too. Organic candy is still candy; it's made with sugar-filled ingredients (like fruit juices and honey) that add up quickly. It's also a nutritionally-void food, meaning it has nothing in the way of vitamins or nutrients your body craves—zero, zilch, nada.

6. Agave Syrup

Agave was pitched to consumers as a healthy alternative to white sugar and even honey because comes from a plant and has a love glycemic index, meaning it doesn't elevate blood sugar right after eating. It does, however, contain a ton of fructose—at least 80-90 percent, way more than white sugar—and can lead to insulin resistance over time.

7. Flavored Yogurt

Yogurt is a wonderful food; the probiotics found in it are great for your gut, plus it's loaded with protein. But the health benefits are wiped out when you eat the flavored versions sold at stores. The reason: They're loaded with sugar—sometimes 20 grams or more for just a few ounces of yogurt. Keep yogurt healthy by looking for low-sugar versions (ideally less than 8 grams) and add a bit of sweetener or berries for taste. Want some probiotics but not a fan of yogurt?

8. Baked Chips

Baked chips are touted as a health alternatives to regular potato chips since those crunchy snacks are typically fried in oil. While it is true that baked chips are lower in fat, they're typically processed with a ton of added sodium and even sugar to add taste.

9. Light Ice Cream

There are few things in life that are more refreshing on a hot summer day than a bowl of ice cream. Unfortunately, most ice creams are made with heavy creams and gut-busting ingredients that make it high in calories and fat. The answer has to be light ice cream, right? Nope. Light ice cream is loaded with artificial sweeteners and chemicals to give it taste without all the added calories.

10. Calorie-Free Sprays

Add butter for zero calories? That's the promise touted by various calorie-free sprays. The truth is that these so-called zero calorie sprays actually do contain calories—as many as eight or ten every few sprays. The reason: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says any food that contains fewer than five calories per serving can "round down" and print zero calories on the nutrition label. Plus, many times they're not made with actual butter, but butter-like chemicals. Yuck! The better choice is to add spices or tasty oils (in moderation) to give your food flavor.

11. Diet Soda

We've all heard that regular soda is one of the worst things to drink, thanks to its high sugar content. But, what about diet soda? It may be calorie-free, but the high ratio of chemicals and artificial sweeteners are shown to increase the amount of unhealthy bacteria in the gut, making it more difficult to maintain a healthy weight. Further, a study published in Diabetes Pro found that people who drank two or more diet sodas a day experienced waist-size increases six times that of non-diet drinkers.

12. 100-Calorie Snack Packs

Those 100-calorie packs of your favorite sugary treats seem like a good way to eat your favorites in portion-friendly sizes, but in reality, these little snacks are devoid of any nutritional value and are packed with sugar. Plus, you might actually eat more because you assume that—since it's a "healthy" size—it won't matter much in your diet. But, those calories still add up. Have a cookie if you must, but don't make your diet revolve around these snacks.

13. Pretzels

Somewhere along the way, we were told that pretzels make a good snack when you're craving something salty and crunchy. Unfortunately, this just isn't true. Pretzels are often made with enriched white flour and a ton of salt, making its nutritional content virtually zero. Plus, some brands add a ton of sugar and other added ingredients which both increase the calorie count and sugar levels even more.

14. Spinach Wraps

Spinach is packed full of vital nutrients our bodies need each day, but those wraps made with spinach tortillas honestly have so little of the green stuff that it won't do your body any good. These wraps are typically made with the same refined ingredients of other tortillas—like enriched white flour—and green food coloring that gives it the healthy green look. Sneaky!

15. Sports Drinks

Picture it: You just finished a difficult workout and need to rehydrate. Your choices are a flavored vitamin water or regular water. Which should you choose? The water. Sports drinks are marketed as the perfect recovery drink for those who play sports or work out on a regular basis because they contain electrolytes that replenish depleted muscles. But, what you probably don't realize is that these drinks contain upwards of 250 to 300 calories per bottle with as much sugar as a bottle of Coca Cola! These drinks do serve a purpose, but they're more for endurance athletes (think marathoners, soccer players, etc.) who need to replenish lost carbs and nutrients as they work out.

16. Muffins

There's a joke that muffins are just cupcakes, but this is basically true; in fact, some muffins are more calorically dense than your average frosted cupcake! The average cupcake rings in at an astounding 400 calories and has more than a third of your daily recommended intake for fat. Plus, most contain preservatives and ingredients like soybean oil, high-fructose corn syrups and trans fats, making it bad for both your waistline and overall health.

17. Anything Labeled 'Gluten-Free'

OK, let's make this clear right away: Those who suffer from Celiac's Disease must go gluten-free to stay healthy, but that doesn't mean anything labeled as gluten-free is healthy. Marketers have quickly learned that slapping a gluten-free label on foods like candy make them seem healthier than they really are. Plus, foods like cookies, cakes and chips that are made without gluten often contain more calories, sugar and filler ingredients than their gluten-ized counterparts. Your best bet? Stick with the gluten-free versions of your favorite treats (if you can) and pay close attention to the nutrition label on anything labeled GF.

18. Microwave Popcorn

Popcorn is filled with healthy fiber and grains, but only if you get the air-popped versions. The pre-packaged microwave popcorns available in grocery stores are actually one of the worst foods on the planet, thanks to additives and chemicals used in popular brands like Jolly Time and Jiffy Pop. Many brands contain heart-harming trans fats and the dangerous butter-flavor additive, diacetyl, an ingredient shown to harm the brain. Even worst, the bags are also lined with perfluorooctanoic acid—the same toxic stuff found on Teflon pans.

19. Trail Mix

Trail mix is made with ingredients like peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and raisins, so how unhealthy can it be? Pretty unhealthy. Many brands pack their trail mixes with tons of sugar- and salt-coated ingredients loaded with a ton of fat and calories. You can make it on your own if you just have to have it, but make sure you're paying attention to portion sizes.

20. Dried Fruit

Fruit is good—but in moderation. The same goes for dried fruit, but it's actually best to stay away from the dried versions of your faves. Why? The fructose in fruit gets more concentrated when dried out, making it more potent in smaller doses. Also, many companies top their dried fruits with additional sugars and coating, making it even more sugary.

21. Soy Milk

Soy milk is often touted as a healthy alternative to milk, but recent research has linked processed soy products—like that found in soy milk—to high levels of goitrogens, a substance that can cause thyroid problems. Plus, the majority of the soybean crop contain GMOs and high levels of pesticides.

22. Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits

Fruit = good. Yogurt = good. So why does fruit + yogurt = bad? It's simple, really. Like the smoothie bowls we mentioned earlier, fruit and yogurt parfaits sold in grocery stores and quick-serve restaurants are made with pureed fruits (lots of sugar) and sweetened yogurt. Top that off with a hefty serving of granola for crunch and you've got a calorie-loaded treat that tops that of your meals.

23. Blue Corn Tortilla Chips

Blue corn tortilla chips are another health food aisle staple. While it's true that blue corn has more of the amino acid lysine and the antioxidant anthocyanin, most of it gets baked out during the production process. So, you end up getting the same processed and refined chips as other yellow corn brands on the shelves.

24. Frozen Dinners

Those frozen dinners sold by some health food companies seem like they'd be a healthy meal on-the-go, but they're loaded with sugar, salt, and preservatives that negate any health benefits they have. Avoid dinners made with teriyaki or sweet-and-sour sauce—those are the ones definitely loaded with a lot of sugar. Your best bet is to just prep meals on your own that you can grab before leaving for the day.

25. Canned Soups

Like popcorn, soup can be an incredibly healthy meal, but not when you buy it in a can. First of all, canned soups fall under the "processed food" label, meaning it's loaded with sodium—even in the low-sodium varieties. Then there's the added fats and sugar that can up the calories considerably. However, the cans are the real reason to stop buying it forever. The plastic lining in many of the popular soup brands contains Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor that can impact a woman's reproductive system and the health of a child.

26. Low-Fat Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a health food full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and muscle-building protein, but too much of the good stuff is eliminated when you opt for the wrong kinds (often the low-fat version). The fats are part of what gives peanut butter its taste, so taking it out will leave you with a bland nut butter you won't want to eat. Manufacturers know this, so they replace the fat with tasty sugars. This isn't good. Instead, go for the "full fat" versions of peanut butter and eat in moderation, or grind your own peanuts for natural butters with nothing added.

27. Canned Fruit Cocktail

Fruit is good in moderation, but canned fruit cocktail is never a good choice. Sure, it won't spoil like fresh fruit does, but there's a reason for that. Canned fruit cocktails are preserved in heavy corn syrups and sugar-laden juices. And, like soups, they're often housed in cans and plastic containers that contain BPAs.

28. Fruit Juice

Say you have a choice between a soda and a glass of 100 percent fruit juice. Which is the healthier choice? Well, this is a trick question; most fruit juices are loaded with sugar and even high-fructose corn syrups that contain even more sugar than your regular can of cola. Sure, the fruit has nutrients, but most of the good stuff—including fiber—is taking out during the juicing process.

29. Protein Bars

We need protein to build our muscles, but we don't need protein bars to get our daily allotment. Why? Most protein bars are nothing more than glorified candy bars, with plenty of chocolate and sugar to boot. Many actually have more carbohydrates than protein, so it's clear the companies that make these bars are only trying to get in on the protein bandwagon. There are good protein bars, but they're the ones that contain fewer grams of carbs over protein.

30. Rice Cakes

Rice cakes were pretty much the go-to "diet" food back in the '80s and '90s because of their low-calorie counts. However, rice cakes actually rank really high on the glycemic index (GI). The GI measures how fast blood sugar rises in response to food. One a scale of one to 100, rice cakes come in at 82, meaning you'll get some energy from it quickly, but you'll quickly crash and be hungry again within an hour or two.

31. Organic Fruit Snacks

Like organic candy, people tend to think that organic gummy fruit snacks are somehow better than other "regular" brands of the sweet drops. Not true. Fruit snacks are typically made with fruit juice, which carries loads of sugar. Your best bet is to eat the real thing and get the filling fiber and nutrients that come along with it.

32. Fast Food Salads

Think you're making the healthier option because you picked a fast food salad rather than a burger? Sorry to break it to you, but most of the time you're not. Case in point: McDonald's just introduced a kale salad in Canada that contains more fat, calories, and less protein than a Big Mac. That's right: You'd be better off scarfing down a Big Mac rather than a salad. The problem isn't the kale; it's the ingredients added to the kale. Go for a side salad with dressing on the side if you want to indulge in some green stuff while out.

Man charged with homicide of his grandparents, sister, nephew and dog after shooting them in the head and setting them on fire (photos)

0.png

A 24 year old Missouri man has been charged with 4 counts of homicide after killing his grand dad and mum, sister and 3 month old baby nephew by shooting them on the head and setting them on fire . Grayden Denham of Edgerton in Platte County is accused of murdering his grandparents Russell Denham, 82, and Shirley Denham, 81, his sister Heather Ager, 32, her son, Mason Schiavoni, 3 months and a dog in a terrifying homicide case in February. All the bodies were burning when firefighters arrived and had to put out the flames on each body, Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen said at a press conference on Monday. "Upon further examination of the scene, the following details were revealed: Every victim had sustained one or more gunshot wounds. The canine had sustained gunshot wounds and every victim had been set on fire," Owen said. Grayden's mother, Shelly Dunham, has said that her son did not kill his family members. "I was blindsided by this," she told the Kansas City Star. "He's innocent until proven guilty." Grayden Denham is also being charged with arson for setting fire to the home, as well as animal abuse and tampering with physical evidence. After the deaths of the Denham family, Grayden Denham was initially not a suspect. He was charged with theft for taking his grandparents' car and fleeing to Arizona where police found him and arrested him while he was completely naked. "A quadruple homicide is a very serious crime, and if we had the opportunity to allow 12 independent grand jurors to review that case, assist us in the investigation and ultimately determine what charges if any can be brought, in a very serious case we want to take that opportunity," Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said. We had that opportunity in this case and that's what we decided in this case," he added. Denham's attorney John P. O'Connor says he plans to plead not guilty to the charges

Photo: 2 suspected cable thieves caught and tied to a transformer fence in Gwagwalada, Abuja

4.jpg

Angry mob last Wednesday, nabbed two suspected cable thieves and tied them to a transformer fence at Anagada village, Gwagwalada Area Council. According to Daily Trust, a resident of the community identified as LLiyasu said the two suspects allegedly went to vandalize a newly installed transformer at the outskirts of the community but a security guard at the village primary school heard strange sounds from the direction of the transformer and raised alarm. "That attracted the attention of some youth who ran after them. One of them was apprehended and taken to the chief’s palace. But luck ran out on the second one who came back the next day to carry the cables inside the sack when he was also nabbed and tied to the transformer fence together with the first one," he said. The two suspects were later handed over to men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at Gwagwalada.

Kemi Adeosun says no going back on suspended Special Overtime Allowance for Ministry for Finance workers

index.png

Last week, civil servants in the Ministry of Finance staged a protest at the Ministry's secretariat where they called for the sack of the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun over the non-payment of their special overtime allowance. The workers barricaded the entrance to the ministry and accused the Minister of stopping their allowance. Speaking on Channels TV this morning, Adeosun said the suspension of the Special Overtime Allowance for the workers had been stopped by her predecessor, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala "For about 11 years or so, the Federal Inland Revenue Service who are self funded, get 4% of what they collect as cost of collection. They don't get their salaries from the Federation account and every year they allocate a bonus and part of that bonus was given to staff of the office of the Accountant General, Ministry of Finance and Budget of the Federation. It has always been contentious but its always been paid. In 2014, my predecessor then told them this is the last time it would be paid. It was N800 million at the time. It was communicated to the Union that the allowance wasn't in their scheme of service. Its not an official payment that can be justified and so it is not going to continue. So when I was sworn in in 2015, the first issue that was brought to me was this and this year, the claim was N1.2 billion. I consulted with the Head of Service, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Consulted with the Presidency, checked the legalities. There is no provision for it in the budget for FIRS. There is no provision for it in our budget. It is a customary payment rather than an entitlement. I began to engage with the leaderships of the unions around this and explained to them that it wouldn't be possible to continue. I think people are just disappointed because they have always had it. I took time to explain to the staff that what you are legally entitled to you would always get but what is not a legal entitlement, a customary entitlement, can't be paid"she said

I Got My Life Back on Track thanks to SlimTea

1.jpg

Slimtea continues to effect lives in the most positive ways yet, Read a beautiful extract from a testimonial from a satisfied customer,

“I have always been a big girl and I love it. I guess it is in my genes because mum, dad, big bro and kid sis are all chubby. After a visit at the doctors, I realised my cholesterol level was high and had to maintain a healthier lifestyle. I needed to change my diet and workout routine; and gosh that sounded like a lot work but I did it anyway. This was a struggle, a very big one. I had long working hours and the traffic back home was always crazy, which made snacking an easier option for me.

Although this was working, it was not at the pace I wanted it to. I began to feel exhausted, discouraged and less likely to continue. I needed a solution that was also effective but less exhausting. As an ardent LIBer, browsing through her blog and enjoying juicy gossip, I came across a SlimTea ad. My first thought was, these Chinese people have come with all these their funny teas, but because I was somewhat desperate I decided to try it out; what different will it make anyway I thought.

3 major cash machine use dangers averted! 3 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Emai

On one hand, bank cards made transactions safer and harder for the thieves to steal your money. On the other hand, new cyber criminals are after you and they use ATMs or cash machine changers to get your money. 3 biggest safety concerns for bank cards users: So, you come up to an ATM, insert your card and get the cash. So, easy and nice. Are your money in danger now? Well, in most cases the money you withdraw during the transaction is safe. But the ones left on your card can be stolen. And here is how: 1. Through skimming There is that hole you stick your card to and get it read. Some criminals use a fake device attached to the ATM. You think you are inserting the card in the bank machine, but in reality, you put it into the thieves’ hands. They can read the card, clone it or withdraw all the money from it to their account right then and there. Or, they can use some pads on the numbers, where you dial your code. Later on, they can steal your card and have the PIN get all the money or spend it. Some smart criminals set small cameras to get your PIN. What to do: First of all, carefully check the ATM. Does it look normal? Are there any extra pads on the numbers for dialing? Does the entrance for the card look usual? And watch for the hidden cameras. You may use the other hand to cover up the pad while entering the numbers. 2. Watching over your shoulder That’s an easy one, especially when you have a line of people waiting at the cash machine. Still, what you do there requires privacy. What to do: If someone comes up to close to you, just turn around and ask them to move back. There is nothing rude about it. And make sure to stand in such a way that you would close the access to the dialing pad. Do not look up your card balance on the screen. This way others can see how much money you got and tried to steal your card. 3. A stuck card They can put a special thing into the card opening of the ATM. You insert the card and it “gets swollen” by the machine. But in reality, that is not true. The scammers wait for you to go away and leave the card there. Then they take it out and use it. What to do: Do not walk away from the ATM until you get your card back or call the bank at once and block your card. Make it unusable for the fraudsters. If you know about the 3 major ATM scams, you can provide a higher level of safety for you and your funds. SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email

How Nigerians spend N1.4bn daily on sports betting 8 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email

Casinos and endless entertainment are primarily what Las Vegas in the US is known for. But back home in Nigeria, those involved in casino and sports betting are discriminated against by the larger society. In an interview, Yahaya Maikori, the president of the Nigeria Gaming Association (NGA), speaks on the success and challenges of the industry back home in Nigeria. Excerpt. Betting is becoming very popular in Nigeria with the likes of Naija Bet, 1960 Bet amongst others. What is fueling this revolution as far sports betting is concerned in Nigeria? Yes. It may seem revolutionary but it is not entirely a new thing. It started with pools betting which has been around even from when we were children. However the revolution you talk about is now fueled by several things which include access to media, technology and the internet, which have now brought sports even to our mobile phones. Also, the emergence of big brands like the English Premier League, the German Bundesliga, etc. Some of these companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars have in the process of building their brands embarked on some form of evangelization attracting massive followership across the globe. The passion sports evokes has contributed immensely to the popularity of sports betting. Sports betting means to bet on a sporting event. Since Nigerians are sports loving people, getting people from just enjoying a game to staking cash on what they are passionate about is really easy. Tell our readers what they might not know about the Nigeria Gaming Association (NGA). The association started about five years ago when we started having issues with some of the government regulatory bodies. First we started as Association of Casino Operators of Nigeria (ACON), and as time went on, we started to notice the growth of other areas like sports betting, online, etc. So, we decided to broaden the association to cover the whole gaming industry. Currently, our trustees represent different sectors of the industry. The idea is to create a platform for the advancement of our common interest as well as liaise with relevant institutions particularly government to build an economically viable industry for all stakeholders. The manner in which you talk about ‘gaming industry’ suggests to me that we have an industry here in Nigeria. In actual sense, do we really have gaming industry yet? Oh we have a very big gaming industry, probably bigger than what you imagine. In an interview some time back I stated that sports betting were a N40 billion industry annually. But with the information currently available to me now, I know sport betting in Nigeria is much bigger than that and that is only one side of the story. We have casino, we have lottery, promos, poker, video games and apps, etc. READ ALSO: NFF furious with referees favoring teams in the NPFL The Nigerian Lottery Act defines lottery to include “any game of chance or game of skill”. If you use that definition, you will find out that the issue is gone beyond your traditional perception of the industry. It also means that promos sponsored by corporate organizations fall into this space; these include those by telcos, banks, FMCGs, etc. Traditionally, when we talk about the gaming industry, we tend to limit it to only when people stake money but it goes way beyond that. When you text for the purpose of winning something or when you play Candy Crush or Angry Birds on your phone or laptop it means you are actively engaged at some level in the industry. Yahaya Maikori In terms of size, sports betting alone is conveniently over N100 billion in revenues annually. There is a report that says Nigerians stake N1.4 billion every day on sports betting, although I don’t know the basis of that report. But that begins to give you an insight into how big the industry possibly is. Even looking at some of the information I am privy to reinforce those projections. We haven’t even talked about lottery, which is surprisingly still bigger than sport betting. How, in your view, can government create or increase its own revenue in this huge industry as you are saying? First of all, the government needs to understand the industry especially the value chain. Government should not wear the ‘we don’t want to get involved in it’ attitude. This industry is a critical part of the entertainment industry because that is the first service it provides. What you decide to do is entirely your own choice. Some people play video games without staking anything; while some play and stake something. Some people watch football and stake cash while others watch and don’t. The industry is totally ICT driven; a report says Nigeria loses over $5 billion to foreign companies on software per annum. So you can imagine the revenue and employment opportunities that government can tap into if they encourage Nigerian software developers. So primarily, any gaming company is an ICT company. Ninety per cent of what they do is based on ICT. Tourism is another opportunity for government to tap into and that is why people go to Las Vegas and you will be amazed at how many Nigerians travel to Vegas, Macau, etc. Lottery has traditionally been seen as form of taxation and I believe you are going to see many state governments start to run their lottery as an alternative revenue stream. Shouldn’t we be thinking about adequate legislative framework now as a step towards unleashing the industry’s huge economic potential in order to increase government’s revenue in the sector? At the moment, there is nothing deliberate in terms of legislation as far as the gaming industry is concerned. What we have is haphazard. You know in 1977, I think it was Obasanjo’s government that banned the importation of slot machines. Whatever the intention was then the purpose has been defeated and the law is obsolete because things have totally changed. With the benefit of technology people simply download slots apps on their phones while using their credit cards to pay. There is a need for us to have national policy on gaming for the purpose of integrating it into our developmental plan. In fact, a new research shows that with the continued automation of businesses will result in massive unemployment, the millennial will depend on the gaming industry for livelihood potentially making it the biggest industry in the next 10-15 years. For most investors they consider our market a grey market because of the lack of proper legislation in most of the states. Government needs to know that the gaming industry is part of popular culture and technology has made it ubiquitous and the only way you can get a grip is to be proactive in legislating for the sector. Now, there has been this talk of diversifying the Nigerian economy by successive governments since only God knows when, without any deliberate policy and action to back it up. Using the same terminology (diversification), how can government benefit in the industry in terms of taxes? The gaming industry is being taxed at the moment but without an understanding of the uniqueness of the industry and I think this was one of the reasons why our association was formed. The uniform application of taxes without regard to the peculiarity of the industry has discouraged a lot of local operators and potential foreign investors to the Nigerian market. But if the tax regime is properly aligned with what obtains internationally, it will definitely be a huge revenue stream for Nigeria. So, taxes for lottery and sports betting are totally different; in short all the subsectors are taxed differently taking into account their uniqueness. Improper taxation will simply discourage investments while making operators go underground which can become detrimental to the economy. So, engaging the Federal Inland Revenue is top on our agenda. That now takes us to job creation. In what way can government partner with the gaming industry key stakeholders including the gaming association to create employment for the teeming youths in the country? Also, since government maybe naïve of this opportunity, what is your organization doing to bring government up to speed about this huge potential? Part of what we intend to do soon is to hold a media briefing with some of our trustees and members in attendance. This briefing I believe will help lift the mystery surrounding the industry. We need the media to understand in order to help push our agenda of ‘economic development through gaming’. At this briefing data from other jurisdictions would be showcased to disprove some of the misconceptions about the industry. For example, the word ‘casino’ evokes memories of the 60s where all manner of crime converged but casinos are now legitimate establishments you can go to without fear. Besides, the government has several mechanisms in place to check even money laundering which they were hitherto known for. In any case, today’s casino has changed and can also be experienced online or with your phone. We hosted an event last year (Big Africa Summit) in Lagos, where we had key government officials in attendance. We are planning another one this year. We intend to interact with some of the key government agencies we think are important to the development of the industry. This kind of engagement will be the first step towards being able to profile the value chain and how to leverage on the potentials. In the ICT world, companies have been valued in billions of dollars without grossing any revenue. If for example, the gaming companies were using local software, you can only imagine how much of the $5 billion being lost annually on software will be saved by Nigeria! That amount represents a huge leakage to our economy. So, gaming companies are essentially software companies with huge potentials for exports and I believe we have enough local talent to build software that can become dominant in powering the industry world wide. But is there any country you can sight as example where gaming industry is hugely adding to its economic value? Let us not go too far. Let us look at the UK and the US. What drives the economy of Las Vegas, Macau? Some will call it tourism while some call it entertainment and this is part of the reason for poor data because it touches different sectors. Some call it gambling but elsewhere they are known as the software or tech industry. The gaming industry contributes hugely to the economy of these countries. Even in Nigeria, the problem is that we have just not been able to look at it for what it is, and that is why we have not been able to figure its exact contribution to Nigeria’s GDP. READ ALSO: Five countries that may likely win Euro 2016 So, what is the association of which you are the president doing to bridge this data gap in order for you to be able to state categorically the gaming industry’s contribution to the GDP? I asked this question because government may want you to convince it what your contributions are at the moment if it will have a sense of this potential. We have started engaging all the relevant stakeholders. We also make available templates to our members to assist us with data capture; but the most effective way of covering the leakages is to educate government on the benefits and importance of putting in place framework that will enhance proper licensing, monitoring and enforcement. As a first step to achieve this, we are partnering with Clarion Events, owners of ICE/EIG, to host a high level event this year where we are going to have all the critical government institutions in one room to chart a way forward. Lastly, who are those that constitute the stakeholders of the gaming industry in Nigeria? The stakeholders are many. We have government institutions, state governments, those interested in entertainment, financial institutions especially those involved in payment processing; investors, operators and even the punters. The truth is that we are all stakeholders in this industry at some level. SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email
